Laryngopharyngeal Reflux

What is it?

The term Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) is used when there is a backflow of food or stomach acid back into the throat. It can occur at any time, even if a patient hasn’t eaten anything. While regular reflux (GERD) comes with heartburn or indigestion, a patient with LPR usually has none. This is why it is sometimes called “Silent Reflux” and can be difficult to diagnose.

Symptoms:

  • Hoarseness
  • A “lump” in the throat
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Chronic cough
  • Too much throat mucus
  • Heartburn

While Laryngopharyngeal Reflux can be difficult to diagnose, a board-certified allergist/immunologist like ours can work with you to diagnose and treat it.
